Florence Nightingale, the Angel of the Crimea
👩🏻⚕️ 💉Florence followed her calling to nursing and quickly identified cleanliness as a missing component in medical care.
In 1854, she was called upon to take a troop of nurses to Scutari, the British base hospital in Constantinople to help care for the wounded soldiers of the Crimean War.
They were warned of the terrible conditions they would find.
Scutari was built upon a cesspool that contaminated both building and water supply. Patients lay upon stretchers set on the filthy floors, with rats and insects scurrying amongst them. Bandages and soap were in short supply, and despite their terrible war wounds, patients were dying from infectious diseases like cholera and typhus.
Florence put the healthiest patients to work scrubbing every inch of the hospital – floor to ceiling.
Florence dedicated every waking moment to care for the sick and injured - they called her both the Angel of the Crimea, and the Lady with the Lamp.
Nightingale made it her mission to improve hygiene practices, significantly lowering the death rate at the hospital in the process.
